I am one of 2 teachers who have a behavior classroom in a Title I elementary school. The area of town in which many of my students live have empty lots that are littered with paraphernalia from the local drug houses. All my students have been removed from the regular ed classroom because of consistent misbehavior. Some of my students have been removed from their home school to attend my class. You see, mine is a behavior classroom in which many of my students have learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional disturbance, and some have Aspergers. The goal of my room is -- once their behavior is under control -- to return them to the regular classroom, and eventually their home school. This takes a great deal of direct instruction of social skills. Between the two classrooms, I work with 10-15 students on a daily basis.
The biggest complaint I receive from teachers is these students are unable to complete their work independently without instigating an altercation. In addition to teaching this social skill, I must maintain their academic performance so they can pass the state test. This is a difficult feat in itself, since all my students are usually 1-2 years behind academically, as a result of their inappropriate behavior. My students, in general, are very unmotivated, since their families don't see a need for education...and subsequently, neither do they.
Therefore, I plan to develop my students' independence during reading instruction. The products I chose are based on my students interests and styles of learning. All the products I chose reflect the varied styles incorporating a visual, kinesthetic and auditory style of learning.
With your help, I know that using these products will allow me to develop in my students the independent skills they need to be successful in the regular classroom. By becoming independent learners they will, in turn, establish a life long skill which will benefit them in becoming productive citizens in our society. Additionally, as a second benefit of your generous support, my students will become more academically competitive with their peers. This will, in turn, improve their self-esteem, which will promote their independence. Yes, everything is interrelated, and I hope to have your support in this project. As this project succeeds, I plan to share my technique with other teachers as a means to reduce the number of students who must be removed from their regular classrooms due to inappropriate behavior.
