Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am in a self-contained classroom. I am teaching first grade this year in Louisiana. My school loops the teachers. Looping means that I move with my students each year. My school is considered low-performing and is composed almost entirely of African-American and low income students. 100 percent of the students receive free lunch.

The students in my class are considered extremely at-risk and are overwhelmingly poor. Their parents work very hard at 1 or more jobs and really don't have time to spend reading to their children. My students have very little access to books and are not used to having them read to them and they don't have any interest in reading. So when they start reading in school they are often not reading on grade level. This of course causes them to be frustrated and they put a a resistance towards books and reading.

If I had a Leveled Books Classroom Library, I could help them become successful and enthusiastic readers- with books on every reading level. With the library, they will be able read books on their level. For the below-level readers, this library will give them the confidence to build on their reading skills on. For the on-level readers, they will be challenged to read more and beyond their skill level. I will use these resources to start and foster a love of reading. Eventually, this love of books & reading will help them do better in school.

With your help, my students will gain not only a love of reading, but realize that a love of learning will take them far in life. By having these books, the students will enjoy reading. Of course, the more they read the more they will know and the further they will go. Your help will ensure that my students gain a love of reading. They will see that not all reading is boring. They will realize that not only do they read to learn, but they can read for enjoyment.
