My students do not know what the world was like before the internet. I am faced with a new challenge this year in teaching two new subjects, geometry and precalcuus, in an inner-city, high needs school where over 80 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite the many obstacles my school faces, we are doing amazing things at my school thanks to the help of many. I am teaching upperclassmen this year, and have the responsibility to prepare my students for the next level. Upon successful completion of my class and passing an end of course assessment, students will gain their first college credits. Next year they will take math at the local University in classes with college students. There is no better way to get students to believe they can go to college than by getting them in there early. I am doing a lot of online activities and communication to prepare them for the college level. The future of computers is touch screens, so I want my students to be interested in and feel comfortable with this technology.
Technology is so heavily relied upon in every field, yet in a school district of 30,000 plus students, it is non existent in too many classrooms. My students crave learning through technology and cannot be reached through "old-fashioned" learning. They all have a common interest in computers, ipods, cell phones, and video games and have an instinctual way of learning to use the newest product that comes out.
This tablet laptop will put technology in the hands of me and my students to give us the proper tools necessary in today's education. How many of you were terrified to go to the board to answer a math problem? In my class, the board can come to you. I will be able to place the tablet on a child's desk and it will wirelessly project what they write through my projector. Kids can't wait to get there hands on this kind of technology and play around with it, so it creates instant classroom engagement. This will also help me out with classroom management. Remember what went on whenever the teacher turned his back to write on the board in high school? I can walk around the room writing notes on the tablet while keeping my eyes on the students. This should cut down on unidentified flying projectiles by at least half!
