Working at a new small school, in a high poverty area, we are trying to get students prepared for college while also trying to increase literacy rates. Beginning an advanced placement English class, we are trying to reach students who have the desire to go to college, but are severely lacking knowledge of important works of literature as well as the skills needed to interpret and analyze those works of literature.

On average our students are at least two grades below in their reading levels. Having done research, graphic novels have prove to drastically assist students in achieving those skills necessary to bridge the gap in their literacy ability because the text is coupled with visuals that help students to understand what is happening. We hope that by using the graphic novel form of classic works of literature, that our two major issues are tackle, which are increasing literacy rates, and helping students discover important literature selections in order to succeed in college.

A novel that has a multitude of very interesting topics that will surely hook our students is Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein". A class set of the graphic novel form would be amazing! Students for years to come will enjoy reading this novel at our new school. We want to infuse them with classic literature, without intimidating them with the difficult language.

Please help our new and small school succeed! We want to increase the literacy rates in order to increase the chance for our youth to be successful and productive members of society. You can help empower them!
