My students need two Garmin 405 units to work in groups on a Research Study that will emulate their parents' military PT program and teach them how to design and carry out a research study at the same and learn about the positive health aspects.
LIVE BIOLOGY LIVE!!!! I teach Biology in the state of Virginia. The majority of my students are in 9th or 10th grade (unless repeating course or transfer). Our school focuses on the students and helping them become active members of the community.
There is never enough money to acquire cool, cutting-edge technology that will help those hard-to-reach students get involved. You know the student: average or below average grades, not involved in any school activities, may be on the quiet side or not; these are the students who need us the most to get involved in their school and community and be successful in all areas of their life.
Science students at all levels are expected to know all parts involved in a research study. This project, "Research Study," will accomplish that and then some. Students will design, carry out and actively participate in their teams' research study. The Garmin 405 is a wireless GPS monitor that will automatically sync with computer in classroom. Students can decide which variable they want to study: distance and/or pace. Students will have to work as two project teams per class. Students can analyze data and e-mail data, work-outs and pictures to military parents/guardians who are not currently at home. Parent/Guardian and child could help each other develop healthy goals and exercise routines that would help develop healthy habits for life.
With childhood obesity at an all time high, this program will open up students to exercise, technology, school science-related objectives and communication with parents/guardians. Please consider helping making a difference in the health and education of a child.
I am currently doing a pilot study very similar to this but need more software and Germin units. The 405 is the best because all of their data will automatically sync with the computer in our room and all children will have the opportunity throughout the year to participate and benefit from exercise in a science-related, research study designed by themselves and their peers as they work together in student teams to get healthy and learn about all of the parts involved in research studies.
