Each year my colleague and I take our urban third graders on an overnight 'wilderness' environmental adventure. We have reserved a time at the Marin Headlands Institute where the children can spend two days and one night in this coastal location.
Marin Headlands' environmentalists guide the students in wonderful explorations that teach them about this exquisite natural reserve. They also promote cooperative learning and team building skills. The first day of school the children ask "Are we going camping? Are we going camping?" We need, however, a bus to transport us to the site as the number of working parents who own cars or could drive is insufficient.
