Preparing children for "REAL" reading! Informational texts to help students reach literary success!
It is not enough that children become proficient readers of fiction. Although it is satisfying and engaging, it fails to prepare children for the informational texts they read more frequently later in there schooling and life. Children need the opportunity to explore areas that might interest them, while simultaneously providing background knowledge to improve their reading, writing and thinking.
By providing more informational texts, my students will be more exposed which in turn will guide them more to read these books. Currently my classroom library consists of mostly fiction texts. My students will fall in love with reading and learn literary skills that are lacking in so many classrooms.
Our school is over 70% minority, where the students have very little life experience. Please help me to expose our students to informational texts.
