Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my 7th grade science classroom, I have a wide variety of English language levels. One method that I have found useful in reaching all of these students is having them draw pictures and diagrams of the different scientific topics we are discussing. In order to make this a more efficient and effective practice I would like to obtain 40 small white boards and white board markers so each student can have his or her own board to hold up when I ask a question. This is an incredibly efficient way to gage the understanding in such a large class and allows the students more confidence to attempt something they may not be comfortable with because mistakes can easily be erased. It has been my experience that students also view white boarding as a treat and pay more attention to the material when they know they will get to use the whiteboards. I am especially excited about having each student use his or her own white board because that way I can see more clearly where students are having trouble with the material. I use heterogeneous grouping in my classroom which can lead to me only knowing where the top 50% of my classroom is when students have to share white boards. I feel that white boards would be an incredible boost to my teaching practices, especially when instructing my English Language Learners in scientific concepts.
