Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a group of three First Grade Teachers in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. Our school is a new public charter school, thriving in the poorest congressional district in the country. Having opened just one year ago, the school community is both new and tight knit. Dealing with the struggles of life in our neighborhood is a challenge everyday for our students and our families. Outside there are shootings, there are gangs, there are odds stacked against children on each city corner. Inside, we provide the students and families with a community they are proud to be a part of -- a community which consistently reinforces the importance of being a devoted, productive, helpful individual; a community that is aware, active, and relentless.
Our students know about Hurricane Katrina. They watch the news, they see the papers, they have friends and relatives in New Orleans. When they talk about the hurricane, they are understandably sad and confused. Although most of our students are living at or near the poverty line, they are concerned about how things can possibly get better for the children impacted by Katrina. As members of the greater community, our students would truly benefit from the opportunity to be agents of change.
The materials in this proposal (bookbags, pencils, crayons, pencil sharpeners, paper, notebooks, pens, erasers, scissors, and rulers) will provide "Classroom Care Packages" for 66 children whose lives have been turned upside down by Hurricane Katrina. Our 66 First Grade students will write letters, send pictures, and pack up 66 individual "Classroom Care Packages" to ship to their peers in New Orleans.
Your generosity will not only help young victims of Hurricane Katrina have the materials they need to start their school year -- you will be helping to instill purpose and human responsibility into our students' evolving definition of community.
