I teach Regents chemistry in NYC. Many of my students come from non-English speaking homes.The typical student has below grade level math and literacy skills.

Most of my students view chemistry as almost impossible to understand due to its abstract nature. I've been using magnets in the classroom to demonstrate the movement of molecules but it is time-consuming and not a very interactive way to teach.

With the use of a LCD projector I can show how reactions occur at a molecular level. Repeating the presentation for students who are easily distracted-is easy. Pictures of the actual chemicals and reactions can be downloaded to make the presentations more realistic. Video clips of demonstrations that are too dangerous to be done in the school can be added to the presentations. Interactive websites can add to the learning.

In addition to the presentations that I make, students would be encouraged to create their own presentations on chemistry topics. This would give them some ownership of the course. Students would learn by teaching other students. It would also give me an opportunity to discover and correct any misconceptions that they have about chemistry.
