Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you have pen-pals in elementary school? I remember classroom projects writing to children from foreign places. The eye-opening experience of getting letters from someone your age who has a different perspective helps to foster a healthy world view and tolerance of others. Chicago is a huge sea of culture with schools functioning like islands. The students from my inner-city west-side elementary school have no idea what students their age are like in Hyde Park, Rogers Park, Ukrainian Village, Pilsen, or Lakeview -- even though those neighborhoods are less than a few miles away.
I have started a city-wide pen-pal portraits project. Six third grade classroom teachers will teach their students to write friendly introductory letters, and photograph their classroom and school environment. In collaboration with the art teachers, each student will create a self-portrait. The completed class projects will be labeled, packaged, and mailed to other participating classes in a rotation. The students will look at the artwork, read the letters, then respond to the letters from five different Chicago students. They will have the chance to compare themselves to others, discover what cultural differences exist in their city, and find out what they have in common with kids their age from different neighborhoods.
The supplies we need are simple. We need disposable cameras, art paper, colored pencils, and envelopes to package and ship projects. Thank-you for your time! Please contribute!
