One Book, One School: Allowing Students to Feel Included

Open and vibrant minds in our middle school await the start of our school's successful "One Book, One School" literacy program.

This program allows us to mix literacy education and bond as a school environment by inviting all three grades to share in this cultural experience. With little funding, we have made it work the past two years. However, now, with a smaller amount of funding, we want to make it work again.

We have been able to send our kids back in time to 1906 San Francisco earthquake and post-civil war Florida. Now, we want to take them to Afghanistan. With all that is happening in the world, it is imperative that the kids experience ways of life in other areas in the world that make the news, but that they might not necessarily understand or know about. Thus, this book, "The Breadwinner" was chosen. They'll also experience a strong, resourceful female main character. We want to take them on a much larger journey this year. By providing a class set of "The Breadwinner," 30 copies, you will be giving students a chance to share this whole-school literary experience with their classmates, teachers, administrators, and other school staff.

With this much larger journey comes a price tag. With school funding in our state lower than in years past, our school has purchased books for the teachers to read out loud. Unfortunately, the concern is that students with varying abilities will have a hard time listening. Copying chapters at a time isn't possible and teachers struggle with creative, affordable, and resourceful methods to involve the hard-to-reach students. With your donation, you will be allowing some of the students with diverse literary ability in our school the chance to be successful members of the journey we will go on together. Those who need the help will get it, if you help us fund it. You'll also be allowing us to use funding we have available to plan and produce a culminating cultural fair activity that will awaken our kids' senses to a world beyond their back door.
