This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Have you ever read a really great series? I hope that by the end of this year, all of my students will be able to respond "yes" that that very question.
Countless studies have shown that the best way to improve students' reading skills is merely to have them read more. As a result, I recently started an independent reading program for my 7th graders, many of whom are reluctant readers who struggle with literacy skills.
Unfortunately, it is not enough to simply provide kids with time to read (which we have done) - you also have to provide them with books they love. When a student connects with a book, it is a truly inspiring thing and the next trick is keeping the momentum going by feeding the student more books he or she can connect with. Series are an excellent way to not only get kids excited about reading, but also keep them excited as they attempt to read all three, five or twelve titles in a collection. That is why I am hoping to add the "Twilight," "Cirque du Freak" and "Hip-Hop High School" series to my classroom library.
By purchasing these favorite series for my students, you will not only be helping my students become better readers and writers, but also help them form a life-long love of literature - a gift that will serve them well for years to come!
