"Mrs. Stallings, can I stay after school with you today?" This is a common question asked of many of the students at KIPP: Gaston College Preparatory (GCP), in rural North Carolina. Although our fifth-eighth grade students attend classes from 8AM to 5PM every day and one Saturday a month, many students want to stay after school to get extra help, to gain more knowledge, and to make sure they are ready to enter the college of their choice in the next 4-7 years.
In many schools, science class is one area that often does not receive much attention. When more time is needed to improve students' math, reading, and test taking skills, science, as well as other subjects, are the ones that get cut from the daily schedule. However, at GCP, we want all of our students to have a solid, well-rounded education in all subject areas. We believe that all of our students can, and will, succeed in all academic areas, and exposure to all disciplines early on will only contribute to each child's success.
Early on the fifth grade, as the fifth grade science teacher, I am able to quickly identify students whose strengths lie in the math/science area or who have a genuine passion for science. Unfortunately, many times, due to the limited class time available, I am unable to truly foster their interest and passion for science. Therefore, this year, I would like to hold an after school program once a week, called "Science in a Nutshell", where 5-10 students can spend an hour each session exploring science concepts that are beyond what they are learning in the classroom. This after school program will further expose the students to the area they are most passionate about--science--in hopes of creating future scientists who will help change the world we live in. The students will begin with a study of the human body, a topic that is not covered in the 5th grade curriculum, and will continue on into lessons about earth, physical, and other life sciences.
This proposal will fund after school science kits for these 5-10 fifth graders and will be used throughout the school year. The kits can also be used in future years for other students as well.
