My students need a class trip for 25 students to participate in the Spotlight on Small Fry workshop and an IMAX "Beavers" movie at the Norwalk Connecticut Maritime Aquarium. They need funds for transportation (bus ride) to and from the aquarium.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you remember your first field trip from your school years? Most people do. As a matter of fact, I remember the very first field trip that I took when I was in Kindergarten. It was wonderful! We went to an apple orchard, picked apples, and ate them. If you ask any adult you know, they will most likely be able to remember the first field trip they took in elementary school. Donating to this project will give my kindergarten students priceless memories of their field trip that will last a lifetime.

Sadly, because of budget cuts in our school district, we do not have any funds available to help defray the costs of a field trip. All of my students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Their parents work hard at two and three jobs to support their families. In order to be able to participate in any enrichment activity such as a field trip, those funds that have been cut were crucial. As a result, without your help my students will not be able to afford to go on ANY field trips.

My students live within five miles of an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean (a body of water otherwise known as the Long Island Sound) and they may grow up learning nothing about it. I want to change that and give them a rewarding field trip experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Every year I teach a thematic unit about the ocean to my Kindergarten class. We study ocean vocabulary such as crab, fish, lobster, sand, salt, tide, jellyfish, starfish, etc. We learn to read ocean books. I buy the class a tank of hermit crabs to observe. Can you imagine what a thrill it would be for my class of 5 year olds to be able to see real-life sea creatures up close? The field trip to the Maritime Aquarium will allow them to touch a live starfish and to see other ocean fish and mammals up close. This is an experience that will positively affect them for the rest of their lives.

Your generosity will give urban students an important learning experience that they would never be able to have since many of their parents do not have the transportation or money to take their children to the Aquarium. This is an essential hands on learning field trip that may even inspire a child to study Marine Biology!
