My students are a great group of 6th grade kids in one of Chicago's still standing tower public housing projects. Music and art are two areas that can motivate them to challenge themselves and make strong gains in other areas of their education. I decided to go out of my own comfort zone this summer and spend the first two weeks of my summer taking courses on integrating art and writing. What a surprise - it's fun AND educational! I'm not the most talented artist so I've always avoided attempting much art in my own work. But I learned in these classes how to help students (and myself) overcome these fears and use art to help us learn to be better writers and readers. So now I want to share what I've learned with my students. The school at which I took my classes donated one pad of sketch paper and I purchased some low quality brushes to create our Art and Writing Trading Cards, but I need to purchase enough supplies for the whole class (30 students in each the two classes I see) to participate in the project. The supplies are fairly low cost and will hopefully last us for a whole semester. I would like to order brushes, a water color class set, and disposable mixing palettes for this part 1 of the project. Thanks so much!
