FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Woods's classroom raised $241

This project is fully funded

I am already impressed by my second grade students, and it is only the end of the first quarter! They are intrigued by reading books and weekly readers and look forward to answering the comprehension questions that are provided. I am a second grade teacher to 26 students in an low poverty community in southeast Washington, DC. My students are very unique in their ability to process information a bit differently from their peers. Whenever they take off with a task, it is my responsibility as the enforcer to ensure that 100% memorization is taking place. So I began thinking. . . I wonder how things would go if they were their own authors amongst the classroom and beyond? My students will be tackled in the grades to come with answering questions like "who, what, when, where, why and how" for standardized testing. By providing us with a bookmaking kit and a binding machine, my students will be able to individually create various genre based books with their own illustrations. They will be able to create their own comprehension questions and exchange them with their peers. The best part is that we are providing nonstop literacy with students. Since most of the students are on various reading levels, they will be creating mutli-learning books. Some students will be able to create picture books for beginning readers and other students will be able to continue to enforce writing styles and challenge each other with various comprehension questions. Additional spines will help to generate further books shared by families and friends as a part of a workshop center. Most importantly, we will be able to create our own books as a class sharing our own concepts of setting, characters, plots, and comprehension.
