Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It all started one day during a lunch period. One of my 8th grade girls came up to my office and asked "Ms. D can I stay with you instead of going to lunch...those girls start too much junk." I said "sure." Every day after that, the numbers grew I would have 15 of them at times.
I was in law enforcement prior to this position. Through much research, I learned that girls between 11 and 18 years of age are "at-risk." The crime stats were sky rocketing in this group. Most black and latina females are raised without a male in the home, or the wrong male in the home. They deal with all levels of abuse, sometimes as a result of low self-esteem and alot of promises.
We would just talk and share experiences, sometimes laugh and sometimes cry. Most of all we learned what was discussed was to stay in the family. The family was US. The staff noticed it was working, not so many girlfights and conflicts. This bond developed into an after-school program called Bright Futures.
It is 5 years later and some of the grads come back to talk to the new girls and there is alot of mentoring by women in all walks of Life. We are now called C. H.O.I. C. E. - Creating Heroines OF Independence Through Collective Expression.
Things we could really use include:
1. 20 Baseball caps with the CHOICE logo (I can get the logo done}
2. 20 lightweight jackets to put the CHOICE logo on
3. 27 inch TV with DVD and VCR so we can watch some of the conflict resolution ,self-esteem, abuse, and making healthy choices infomational pieces that I get from women's organizations.
Sometimes we get to go on trips to plays and to visit other female groups. I have had T-shirts done and the girls love them. All they want is to belong to something; I would rather they belong to C.H.O.I.C.E. than some gang. Thank you so much for this opportunity.
