I am a 6th grade math teacher in the New York City school system. I teach at a middle school, MS 135, in the Bronx. We have very little technology in the classroom. We have computers in separate labs in the building. But I would like my students (three 6th grade classes) to benefit inside the classroom from the use of a computer projector. We are going to do a major presentation project where the sudents will be asked to research the history of the New York City Subway and connect it to math. They must research subway history, NYC transit statistics, important people, and dates. Then they must create a major presentation of their research. The goal of this project is two-fold. I want my students to recognize that math is used in so many everyday things, especially the subway which they use every day. I also want them to get experience in presenting their research information to the class, a skill they must have once they enter high school. I would love for my students to be able to present the Microsoft Powerpoint presentations they create to their fellow students. I am from a technology background and I think it is so very important for students to be comfortable in presenting their unique ideas to the class. They also need to be familiar with the latest technology equipment available to them. We live in a high-tech world. In order for them to have a better chance at a successful career, they need to know how to use such equipment. Finally, I think using presentation equipment would allow my students to express their creativity much more freely. So many of them want to be creative, but have no way to do so. We have no art classes in our school that would allow students to be creative and artistic. This would be the answer for them. Plus, not only am I asking for this equipment for my students' use, but also for my use in teaching lessons. Just imagine how much more effective I could be as a teacher if I could integrate technology into my math lessons. I could use the internet to incorporate math into everyday life activities. I could project my notes and math vocabulary for them. I could also very creatively display examples of problem solving and math procedures. Please give my Bronx students a fighting chance to learn new technology skills that will be such a huge benefit for them in their futures.
