Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th grade Mathematics to English Language Learners in East San Jose. Every one of my 44 students is at least 3 years behind grade level in math. This makes getting my students excited about mathematics a constant struggle and getting students to review math concepts voluntarily virtually impossible. I am convinced, from observing other teachers and classrooms, that math games will help my students to catch up to grade level, to enjoy math and to happily review math concepts. There are 3 games I would like to introduce to my students. "Race to 20" helps students with the concept of a number line and negative and positive numbers. "Concentration" involves converting fractions, decimals, and percents. "Factor Captor" fosters higher order thinking skills with an emphasis on factoring numbers. The following is a list of supplies needed: 1. Two different colored dice for every pair of students. 2. Three different colors of florescent paper to make "Concentration" cards. 3. Pencils 4. Paper clips to keep track of the score in "Race to 20." 5. Bingo chips of two different colors to cover factors in "Factor Captor."
