My students need safety vest and gloves so we can complete our service learning project of adopting the street in front of our school.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Prior's classroom raised $750

We are alternative! That's right, we are the alternative school for our system. However, it is not what you think. Our students come to us when they are no longer allowed to attend "regular" public school. Many of them have committed crimes, been involved in fights during school, have carried a weapon to school, and/or are involved with gangs. Most of our students come to us out of poverty. We have over 95% of our students living in poverty. It is our challenge to show them they are not bad people but they have made some bad choices. We encourage them to choose another path for themselves. One of the ways we are doing that is through service learning. One of our service learning projects is to adopt a city street. (The one in front of the school.)
I have found that our students want to give back and are grateful for the opportunities we provide. They talk about doing something but need the guidance and support from the community to get them there. They take pride in their neighborhood and in our school. We have a similar program with recycling at our school and everyone is involved. Students will stop someone from throwing something away that could be recycled instead. My hope is that they will do the same for the street. I would love to stand at my window one day and see a student walk past a piece of trash and pick it up to throw it away. That is when I know I have taught them community. When they do it on their own and think that no one sees them do it. I feel strongly that this project will get them there. If they see the staff working along side the students then they may be more inclined to do it on their own.
We have adopted the street, now we just need the safety equipment to complete it. This is a visible project that not only teaches the students about community. It also shows the community how wonderful the students really are. Our students are doing something great for our environment and community, we need them to be safe. The vest will make them noticeable to drivers and the gloves will allow them to pick up items that might be unsafe or dirty otherwise. Please help us to help our community.
You never know what your generosity might spark. Our students are so bright and full of potential. I work hard to expose them to things they would not otherwise have. This project will get them outside their comfort zone and make them look at their community and themselves. I bet you they will think twice before throwing something out a window or when they walk past a piece of trash on the street. With your help you are making our world a more beautiful, healthy place to be. Thank you for your support.
