I work as a special education teacher in PS 373 on Staten Island. It's a high need school in which almost 85% of the students receive free lunch. My students are emotionally disturbed children who come from extremely hard life situations. Other teachers, as well as myself try to make them feel safe when they come to school.
In the beginning of this school year, I was teaching literacy. In February my principal asked me to teach science. I felt as a new teacher, young and fresh out of school, I could do anything. I have found out in the past month that it's extremely difficult to teach without the proper resources. I bring things in from home, but these kids lack the real hands-on stuff that makes science, science.
I want to teach them about all kinds of things, but I need the resources to do just that. I travel into each class that I have with anything that I can hold, because I don't even have a cart to store things on. I really need things like microscopes, and magnifying glasses, and anything that would bring real life science to their hands. I want them to be able to experience the outside world. I want to do a butterfly unit with them in the spring, I need to order the caterpillars, and things that go along with that. I have 80 students in 7 special ed classes. I want to bring some knowledge to their lives through meaningful hands-on experiences. I want to be that teacher that they remember who made learning fun, and made the difference. My students deserve that!!!!
