I am a pre-K teacher of 16 four year olds in a low socioeconomic area. Over 90% of the students in my school qualify for free lunch. I would like to improve the dramatic play area in my classroom to help my kids improve their interpersonal as well as their language skills. I believe the children will be inspired by the new materials I have chosen to be more creative in the dramatic play area and interact more realistically. The play dishes and utensils are familiar enough to develop complex pretend story lines. This will provide an atmosphere where the children feel comfortable and can develop communication skills, vocabulary and organizational skills. Interpersonal skills, sharing and cooperation can also be fostered in an environment where ample materials for several children are available to role play in familiar and imaginary situations. These situations can create opportunities for the children to engage in problem solving activities that relate to real life situations. Being able to recreate and work through these situations enables children grasp the workings of their everyday lives and helps them to communicate and experiment with alternative ways of dealing them. Role playing is an important part of children developing their identity and enabling them to project themselves into their possible roles in their own futures. Please help me to give these children a chance to get off to a good start.
