At my school, East Avenue Middle School in Livermore, CA, I have noticed that the kids don't always have things to do at lunch. They are no longer allowed to play touch football on the field; the basketball courts are taken up with the older kids who are in PE at the time; and there is no librarian in the library for students to go in there. They're looking for a calm, safe place to eat their lunch and have some fun. What's a child to do? For the last couple of months my sixth grade math students have been coming into my classroom. Sometimes we work on math together and other times they are looking for something more "fun" to do. I have brought games from home and they have a great time learning to play games such as Risk, Clue, and Scrabble. I'd like to teach the kids to play Chess. I think it will improve the students' reasoning skills while allowing them to have fun. I'd like to purchase ten "learner" chess boards with pieces. These are the plastic mat types with the letters and numbers on the rows and columns so they can keep track of the point system in case there isn't enough time to finish the game. These are students whose parents don't have the time or energy at home to teach them these basic games - frankly the parents are so busy making ends meet that when they get home they are exhausted.
