I am a science lab instructor at an inner-city public school on the Southside of Chicago. The majority of my students are from moderate- to low-income homes. Last year I assigned a project for my eighth grade students. They were required to report on an endangered species and devise a conservation plan for that species. This was a very successful project. This year I would like to extend it with field experiences. I have found an excellent program offered through Brookfield Zoo that will serve as a resource for this project. They offer an educational course called: ?To Save a Species: Managing a Captive Population?. This program will incorporate technology as students use software to learn about how population genetics and demography are explored when managing captive populations. They will learn how zoologists and conservationists devise and carry out plans to save endangered species. They will also have the opportunity to act as Species Survival Plan Coordinators. This field experience will bring a whole new dimension to the Endangered Species research project. I am planning to take 70 eighth-grade students and 12 Upper Level Special Needs students. This project is very important. Teachers will one day have to turn over the world to their students. Students should understand the importance of preserving all resources, both living and non-living. Besides, could you imagine going to the circus and never being able to hear the roar of a Bengal tiger? Could you imagine never hearing the howl of an Ellsmere Island Arctic Wolf? What if the only Mountain Gorillas that you were able to see were in a picture book or on a website? Shouldn't teenagers be involved in planning to save these beautiful and regal animals?
