The Lexiconeers is a fun club that helps students expand their vocabularies and have fun doing it! Believe it or not, this club's members are in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and they are all boys. More extraordinary is the fact they volunteered for this club when other clubs such as tennis and sportsmanship were offered. I was so proud to see these boys putting academics over sports. I teach English Language Arts at a middle school in the Bronx and I just love words, but I realize every one doesn't necessarily share my passion. In this club we play word games. Presently, I have a couple of Boggle games, but that's it. We need all types of word games, and we need small prizes to award to the Vocabulary Olympians. There are presently 20 students in my club. Club members meet every other Wednesday during the eighth period. I want my students to realize how powerful words can be. Although it is not fair, often people are judged by their speech. I want my students to expand their reading, writing, and speaking vocabularies and love every minute doing it!
