I teach language arts to middle school students at the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center in Brooklyn, NY. Eighty five percent of our students receive free or reduced priced lunch. I'm always exploring ways to get my sixth graders motivated during their downtime (i.e. homeroom) by using activities that stimulate critical, interpretive, and analytical thinking skills. This is an ideal way to start the morning off so students will be focused, yet engaged in activities that will help them throughout the school day. Activities I've incorporated in the past have been creative journaling, and discussing and writing critiques on articles from the New York Times. In my language arts classes, I like to introduce various learning approaches and techniques to the students to create a diverse, balanced literacy program that appeals to all learning styles and creates an exciting classroom atmosphere. My goal for this proposal is to use board games to create collaborative learning activities that will allow students to work together to develop the above mentioned skills. I would like to begin this fall. Some of the games I'm interested in using are Scrabble (to build up vocabulary skills), Scattegories and Trivial Pursuit (to recall information relevant to history, literature, or science), Monopoly (to explore commerce, economics, stocks, and finance), and Chess (for critical thinking and strategy skills). Creating this interactive learning environment using board games will introduce students to alternative learning methods in a fun and exciting, yet educational way. These activities will only help to build and strengthen the confidence of students in all of their subject disciplines. Thank you for your time for considering this proposal.
