I'm teaching two intermediate ESL classes. I know most of the students from last year and am looking for some more captivating literature to use this year. I think Junot Diaz's collection of short stories called "Drown" would be great. About 90% of my students are Dominican-New Yorkers as is Junot Diaz. In short, I think Diaz is a captivating writer and gives voice (in English) to a growing Dominican population. I love his writing and think the students will too. Unfortunately our book room mostly contains watered-down and simplified adaptations of "classics" like A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol. Each year most money budgeted for books is used to replace lost or damaged books, rather than to buy new work. With a class set of books, we can research, read, and compare stories in small groups in multiple classes. Please consider donating a class set (34) of "Drown" to these students.
