Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Stetson Middle School is a Title 1 school in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. I teach 32 fifth-graders in a self-contained classroom (i.e. we stay together in the same room for all core subjects). One of the things that Stetson severely lacks is technology in the classroom to facilitate learning. Currently, to present information to my class, I must either write it on the chalkboard or on chart paper, which I would have to purchase. I currently do not even have an overhead projector, as even they are hard to come by in our building (especially if you want one with a light bulb and that isn't so noisy that students can't hear over it). That's why I'm asking for an LCD projector for our class. This projector would impact our class in so many powerful ways. Here are a few: • It would save teacher and class time. Instead of writing out sentences by hand for our "Two-Minute Edit" grammar exercise on the board each day, I could have sentences typed and prepared weeks in advance and on the front screen with two mouse clicks. Instead of letting kids sit idle while I write new directions on the board or tape up the next piece of chart paper (even ten seconds of down time is enough for a ten-year-old to wad up a piece of paper or start a conversation with a neighbor), I could instantly have new information for students to view. • It would make our class a more exciting place to learn. My students wouldn't only have to read about wetlands from a textbook, but they could see photos of animals and faraway natural environments in full color. I could show my class an animated diagram of the water cycle, instead of just drawing arrows on chart paper. • It would allow me to quickly respond to the learning needs in our class. If I realize that my students are struggling with a concept, in a matter of seconds I could color code key words or pull up yesterday's lesson for a review. • It would maximize everyone's ability to access the information. Five rows of students is a long distance away from the chalkboard, and having a projector would guarantee everyone's ability to see the information clearly, as well as my ability to increase the font size on the spot if necessary. In short, a projector would let our classroom be more efficient and responsive, and with many students one, two or more years behind in reading and math levels, we do not have a minute to lose. My students are bright, fun and enthusiastic, and I want to make sure we use that energy towards learning every second of the day. Thank you!
