Our school is an urban school that serves fifth through eighth graders. After hearing girls of all grade levels plead for it all year, a fellow teacher and I have decided to start a cheerleading team at our school. The girls are very excited. After all, our school offers very few extra-curricular opportunities, especially for girls: we have a basketball team that plays in the winter only, and no clubs. We believe that a cheerleading squad would be a great way for girls to build self confidence, face competition, bond with each other, learn healthy habits, and be challenged to high expectations, academic as well as athletic.
