A Video Projector Screen with Rug for 32 fifth graders will help second language learners.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Proctor's classroom raised $558
This project is fully funded
I am a new fifth grade teacher with 32 children who are predominately first or second generation Asian-Americans. Many are second language learners who would benefit from visual aids in the classroom. I am requesting a video screen and rug to accompany an existing overhead projector when using transparencies.
I am starting a second career now that my own children are attending college, and it is my first year at a new school where I hope to give back to the district which educated my own. As a new teacher, my challenge is to outfit an older classroom with appropriate equipment. While visual aids are generally helpful in education, they are particularly effective when English is not a student’s first language. While I do have an overhead projector, I lack a video screen.
Students currently sit very tightly in groups of two, at tables and chairs which could easily be over 25 years old in this urban school. I find that some movement of position helps to keep my students focused and alert. We would use the rug in conjunction with the video screen nearly every day. The overhead projector is useful in presenting the SFUSD language arts programs from Houghton-Mifflin, which is accompanied with a set of transparencies. I am currently using a 6' x 6’ white board to show transparencies and as a “chalk board”. This requires frequent erasing which obviously destroys material that might augment use of the overhead.
We also have "Caring School Community" meetings at least three times a week. Jefferson has received a grant to implement this program, which teaches communication and problem solving skills. Students are typically seated in a circle on a rug where they learn important social skills while respectfully interacting with each other and the teacher. I have no rug, and the floor can be both dirty and hard.
I have just learned of the “DonorsChoose” program, which I am hopeful can make a real difference in the effectiveness of my teaching by providing a few physical tools. The screen will allow me to quickly switch and use both a board and overhead transparencies at the same time. The rug will provide a forum for the students which will be a welcome departure from their chairs, and a clean, comfortable environment in which to learn and interact.
