Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness. - Maya Angelou
Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. - Berthold Auerbach
Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue. - Plato
Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. - Victor Hugo
Without music, life would be a mistake. - Friedrich Nietzsche
What does music have to do with Language Arts? Everything! Music and writing are intricately connected together. We need music to help us feel emotions, to quiet the mind, to inspire us to dream, and to help us realize that we are not alone. For many students, music is a gateway to poetry and figurative language that reaches them in ways words alone can't. For others, music is a great study aide - it quiets them down so that can think.
I would love to have an Apple iPod and speakers in my classroom to utilize as a learning tool. The iPod offers a variety of uses, all of which I hope to incorporate into our classroom experience. First, an iPod can be used to provide music. Second, it can be used to broadcast Podcasts and other programs. Lastly, it can be used along with books to help struggling reading students. I would use the iPod daily as background music, discussion starter, information source, and learning tool.
Instead of using a stereo system, I would like an iPod so that I can also introduce some informative radio to the students. Programs like 'This American Life' or 'Talk of the City' could provide very interesting conversation starters for my middle school students. I hope to be able to use these Podcasts as a learning tool for students.
Lastly, I think a iPod would be a great tool for my seventh grade students that are English Language Learners. Many popular children's books are available for purchase as audiobooks. Students could listen and follow along with the audio reading and work on listening skills as well as having a positive model for reading fluency and pronunciation.
At Luther Burbank Middle School, we have 14% English Language Learners, and 40% low-income students. We have been named a California Distinguished School for our achievement in reaching students of all backgrounds. This is a school of enthusiastic teachers and enthusiastic learners. By donating to iPod Project, you will be making a huge difference in our students' lives by introducing them to the power of music.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
