When I told my students they were going to start reading their first class novel in November, they were ecstatic. When I told them they would also be WRITING their first class novel in November, they were shocked! I teach 6th and 7th grade students. My 7th grade students are SDAIE students that are still working on mastering writing in English. My 6th graders range in reading and writing ability. Very few of my students are enthusiastic readers or writers. On the day I announced our upcoming project, I had at least one student in each period pull me aside and tell me, "I'm not much of a writer, so don't expect much of me." It was difficult for me to get these students confident enough to start writing.
