The 1,000 Pizza Styx Challenge

UPDATE: Every donation on Thursday, April 10, will be matched by DonorsChoose.org. Every "pizza styx" you donate that day will send twice as much money to my students. I graduated from Middlebury last May and joined Teach For America that same summer. Now I teach fifth grade at a year-round elementary school tucked behind the Boulder Station Casino in East Las Vegas. My thirty students are a diverse group of at-risk kids facing challenges both at home and in the classroom. The majority of them are reading or doing math one to three years below grade level, but they are all bright, funny, eager learners. The things I learned at Middlebury help me everyday in the classroom, so now I'm calling on the people I met at Middlebury to help me too. The goal of this Pizza Styx challenge is to convince Middlebury students, staff, faculty, and alumni, to donate $625 — the equivalent of 1,000 pizza styx — to buy books and supplies for my 30 students. Think about all the ways you do (or did) spend money at Midd. Now, think about this instead: <LI>Donating $10.00 (16 pizza styx or one Middlebury parking citation) could buy a year's worth of notebooks, pencils, and folders for one student. Some of my students are homeless and often the most basic supplies are overlooked.</LI> <LI>Donating $15.50 (24 pizza styx or one delicious American flatbread) could buy enough energy snacks for 25 hungry students who are still in the classroom doing remedial work at 4 p.m. after school.</LI> <LI>Donating $27.00 (30 pizza styx or one used political science paperback) could buy a popular illustrated novel to help my ELL students learning vocabulary and my reluctant readers who struggle with comprehension.</LI> I hope you will help us out.
