We are the McAleer’s Baseball Club of the Pancho Coimbre Baseball League. We play in Central Park every April through August. Our club has been around for 14 years and last year we started a little tradition that we like to call “Mustache Day.”
As you can imagine, it was a huge success. Those of us who were able to grow mustaches showed up to the game sporting spectacular ‘staches and those who were not were not left out of the fun; they donned fake mustaches on the field. It was a glorious sight: mustaches and baseball. I submit that it doesn’t get any more American than that. The revelry continued long into the night at our sponsor bar, McAleer’s Pub, as we involved friends, girlfriends, wives, waitresses and other random bar patrons, who all wore fake mustaches.
While Mustache Day 2009 was one for the record books, we thought that the 2010 edition of Mustache Day had to top it. As luck would have it, two weeks before the big day, we learned of Donorschoose.org. A match made in mustached heaven.
Mustache Day 2010 featured a wager between McAleer’s and our opponent, the Turtle Bay Turtles. The winner would donate to donorschoose.org while the loser would donate MORE to donorschoose.org. We also organized a raffle with fabulous prizes such as Mustache Day 2010 t-shirts, a McAleer’s Pub gift certificate and a Walt Frazier signed basketball. We also proudly accepted generous donations from friends and strangers alike. I’m happy to report that McAleer’s won the game as well. The McAleer’s Baseball Club is proud and honored to donate $377 via donorschoose.org, under the flag of the New York Growers.
While our mustaches are gone from our faces, they live on in our collective spirit until the time that they return for Mustache Day 2011. All The Best, McAleer’s Baseball Club hide
