Moving Classroom Walls

Part of: Completed/Archived edit
In order for students to understand the value of reading, they need to transfer this life-long skill to the walls outside of the classroom and school. In order for students to understand the value of reading, they need to transfer this life-long skill to the walls outside of the classroom and school. Many students see reading as only another subject at school instead of a means of enjoyment, adventure, or another form of communication to process information. Unfortunately the casualty in our technological rich world is that of the printed bound book. Many students know how to read, but have little to no interest in doing so. Students have not discovered the joy nor love of reading because they have not found that one particular author that touched their emotions. I would like to make that possible!. Currently my 150 seventh grade English students are required to read for recreation for 20 minutes at home every day. Unfortunately, many of the students don't have access to books at home or ones that are at their current reading levels. Our school library has not been given a budget for the purchase of new books for several years and the books that are available are often not those that interest the reluctant reader. I would like to make available a classroom library that has a wide selection of literary genres with contemporary topics which interest and influence this particular age of students. With this funding, I will be able to purchase multiple copies of popular novels and be able to display and promote reviews of literature so that students can motivate and influence each other to continue the process of reading. Students will be able to talk with each other about the books and experience what life long readers do. I am seeking $500 for this proposal so that I am able to have enough books available for the students who do not have access to reading materials. This will enable them to have a wide selection of books available for this year and the students I will have in future years. Thank you for considering this proposal. hide
