STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education is one of the fundamental tenets of developing young minds. It teaches us to question and attempt to understanding everything around us. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education is one of the fundamental tenets of developing young minds. It teaches us to question and attempt to understanding everything around us. However, quite often it falls to the wayside because it’s “boring”, “hard to understand” or even “hard to teach”. Well, for the month of February I’ve decided to do what I can to help change that – by growing a mustache. What does a mustache have to do with STEM, you ask? Oh, nothing….unless of course you consider that at any given time, a random number of human hairs will be in one of three stages of growth and shedding: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen, being the active growth phase of hair, can vary in cycle time of phase from person to person, which helps to explain why I’ll end this month with a beautiful mane on my upper lip while others (cough…Travis Mitro…cough) will have what makes peach fuzz feel good about itself. And if nothing else, you get to laugh at me. How can you help? I’ve selected a few projects below that teachers in the local (Pittsburgh) area have come up with. These are projects that I think can change the way kids think about STEM, and as a result change the way they think about the world. By donating just a little bit, you help these projects come to fruition. And, you motivate me to stay in the anagen phase longer, resulting in a more comedic mustache in the end. It’s a win-win. hide
