I am an Assistant Principal in Charlotte, North Carolina. I work at a school in which 82% of the students are on free and reduced lunch and a low number of students are on grade level. In a constant effort to boost enthusiasm for education and increase positive characteristics in our students, we have been able to acquire a guest speaker by the name of Alan Williams. He is a motivational speaker who comes to schools and talks about his experiences of being a walk-on basketball player at Wake Forest. His conversation with the students will focus on wanting to be part of a team and the trials and tribulations of sitting on the end of the bench. His limited time on the court didn’t keep him from savoring the game or finding motivation on even his most difficult days. At many points along his journey, Williams contemplated quitting, but the struggles that followed being ‘the guy who never played’ led to an understanding of the true purpose of life’s tests and a new definition of victory. This kind of story will hopefully reach a number of students, help them to set goals and not be discouraged when they have to experience frustrations along the way. Our goal is to purchase a book for every student at the school, so they can have a chance to read it as well as take it home to share with their family. Each book costs $10, and we have about 100 students at our school. hide
