Ancient Civilizations: Powerhouses of the Americas

Help me give my students these books about ancient Mesoamerica. We are studying the Incans, Mayans, and Aztecs, and I would love to get more books to help students build content knowledge.

My Project

My class this year is amazing. My students are genuinely curious about the world around them and are learners at heart. They absolutely love history and want to know about past time periods, past achievements, and how these things still impact us today.

Our first foray into historical periods has been through the study of pre-Columbian civilizations.

We studied what makes a civilization and found where the three civilizations - Mayans, Incans, and Aztecs - settled.

This year, we have started a new program called CKLA for our reading program. It encompasses reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. We started the year with personal narrative and are now moving into learning about ancient civilizations.

During our reading block, we do a lot of reading together as a whole group. Students read excepts and small passages together to practice close reading, buI I find that, due to this practice, students rarely read a whole book from cover to cover. I believe that this is important, so I would love to get recommended reading texts based on the topic.

During our CKLA time, we will still focus on a selection together, but during free times and silent reading, students will immerse themselves in other books about the topic.

Not only will this get them reading full books, but it will also help build content knwoledge so that students can truly be experts in the topics we learn in class.

Not only will I use these books for silent reading and when students are done and want to do research on these topics, but I would also love to start a novel study group where students read books together and talk about them like in a real book club.
