My Students

After learning Spanish and journalism, students are ready to practice their skills and expand their understanding of the world through travel.

Five high school students have learned Spanish, Journalism, or both, and desire to practice their Spanish language skills and/or reporting skills while experiencing the culture and beauty of Colombia and forming relationships with Colombian hosts.

They have diverse backgrounds.

My Project

We will stay on a working coffee farm, walk in the cloud forests, ride horseback through the Valley of Cabala's, visit Butterfly house, and Santa Rosa de Cabal's hot springs. We will do an environmental service project with local campesino youth; interview local personalities of the region. We will stay with host families from the host school in Bogota, visit classes, and participate in social service with economically disadvantaged schools. We will visit the colonial sector of Bogota which includes the over 300 year old neighborhood of Candelaria; the Botero and Gold Museums, Bolivar Plaza, the Cathedral, Congress, Supreme Court and Presidential Palace, plus Monserrate. We will visit Zipaquira, the Salt Cathedral and Colombia's Paramo and the Andean forest which includes the tallest waterfall in Colombia. Student journalists will interview Colombian personalities involved with politics, sports, the arts, or social programs.

The country of Colombia does not have an excellent reputation due to past drug cartels and guerrilla warfare.

But the stereotypes do not match the reality of the current daily life in the country. They also hide the splendor of the Colombian environment and culture. This trip will enable students to experience and report on the real Colombia.
