My Students

I teach in a Special Education program for students with moderate to severe special needs. Some students in the program cannot speak. They can be taught to use assistive technology, but the materials are very expensive. Our school is at 82.4% free & reduced lunch and there has been huge budget cuts.

The students who will use these adaptive materials are always smiling and eager to learn.

They cannot speak or communicate verbally and have so much potential. Students with speech delays often have a lot to communicate but lack the ability or the equipment to share their thoughts. Once I had a student in my class who could not talk, it was assumed that the student could not read. When I offered the student letters that made sounds, the student showed us that he could spell words like "car," "jet," "black," etc. He had been listening to the lessons and soaking it all in. He just did not have the equipment to communicate to the teachers and other adults that he knew how to read and write some words. With these adaptive materials, my students will now be making their own choices, learning about cause and effect, and using the computer to access PowerPoint books, music, or other cause and effect games.

My Project

The students who will be using these adaptive materials cannot speak or communicate verbally, but have so much potential. I have begun using some borrowed equipment, and I have already seen great results. These students who previously just sat in a wheelchair and were "taken care of" are now making their own choices, learning about cause and effect, and are using the computer to access PowerPoint books, music, or other cause and effect games. The purple switch/button plugs into the adaptive mouse which plugs into the computer. The students can then use the switch/button to start & stop music from playing, to turn pages in a PowerPoint book, and to play games. The wireless headphones are needed for safety. The students try to chew on the headphone wires, a huge safety hazard, so they can only play when the whole class can hear the music. The switch/button can also be plugged into the bubble blower so the students can use the switch to blow bubbles. Please donate, you will change lives!

Please donate to this project, because my students need the opportunities that every other child gets.

They cannot talk, so they NEED adaptive equipment! They can learn and communicate, and with your help they will!
