Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine learning about unicellular and multicellular organisms without ever touching a microscope. Currently there are no microscopes in our school.
My inner-city students are challenged everyday in many ways.
They walk to school through clearly-marked gang territories braving drugs and violence. Many are first-generation immigrants and are learning English. All are ethnic minorities. Despite their individual challenges, my students are incredibly resilient and inquisitive. They love to read and constantly ask questions related to science. However, the lack of resources has limited our capacity to conduct inquiry-related projects, which is the backbone of science.
The unit on body systems is fast approaching, and my students need to be able to understand the different levels of biological organization, from cell to organisms. To observe the functional units of organs, students will need to look at cells and tissues using microscopes.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will be used to observe unicellular and multicellular organisms. We will use the microscopes in several lessons to reinforce understanding of the levels of biological organization, cell differentiation, and plant and human anatomy. These topics cover several seventh grade standards.
My students are not limited by their cognitive abilities, but are limited by circumstance. By donating to this project, you will create the opportunity for students to access scientific exploration. Your donation will provide these students with knowledge and will contribute to changing their life paths.
By donating to this project, you will change the life paths of students living in the inner city.
You will create opportunities for children to learn ideas and skills that are not currently available to them. These opportunities are not available because of a lack of money and resources. When you donate, you ameliorate this barrier and create a brighter future for these youngsters.
