Teaching Film Media Literacy and Creating Lifelong Learners

My students need a TV in which they can view classic and modern films so that we can study the art of film and develop an understanding of medias in our film class.

My Students

Do you remember the first great film you saw? Do you remember the questions that it brought to your mind? The inspiration that it fired in your being? In today's world, our students are bombarded with trashy Facebook posts, CGI films, and pointless plots. In a film class we can change all of that...

My students are the underdogs of America.

Many are on free and reduced lunch, deprived of successful mentors in their personal lives, and struggle to find academic success. Yet, they do. They fight against the insurmountable odds that many low income schools face and come out with, not only high school diplomas, but also a rich burning desire for more education, successful careers, and even college acceptance letters. All of this comes from their aspirations to do and be more than those that came before them. They are rich in their diversity in a school where the majority is defined not by one group, but by the endless subgroups of African American, white, and Hispanic. They love sports, friends, girlfriends and boyfriends, and most of all the success they find in an enriching learning environment, with teachers who do a lot with very little funding.

My Project

With something so simple as an LCD television, something that nearly every American home as at least two of, my students will learn to navigate the digital and entertainment society that is ever present in their lives. They will study classic films to learn the history of film, while learning the heart of what makes the difference between a good film and an everlasting film. They will study the unique world of the entertainment industry on the LCD TV through online interviews, YouTube clips, and behind the scenes "How to make a movie" videos. This will empower them to be able to make their own films that represent the critical essence of great films, while also learning and developing creative thinking skills as they make new films that will allow them to enter into the art of film making and give them ownership of the creative aspect of film.

In short, studying film via the LCD television provided by your generous donations here will encourage my students to become the next generation of great film makers and help them to better understand and navigate the constant bombardment of media they are faced with everyday.
