My students are the underdogs of America. Many are on free and reduced lunch, deprived of successful mentors in their personal lives, and struggle to find academic success. Yet, they do. They fight against the insurmountable odds that many low income schools face and come out with, not only high school diplomas, but also a rich burning desire for more education, successful careers, and even college acceptance letters. All of this comes from their aspirations to do and be more than those that came before them. They are rich in their diversity in a school where the majority is defined not by one group, but by the endless subgroups of African American, white, and Hispanic. They love sports, friends, girlfriends and boyfriends, and most of all the success they find in an enriching learning environment, with teachers who do a lot with very little funding.
