Help me give my students sensory tools to self-regulate within the classroom! All of these items will provide a sense of calm and are specifically for kids who crave or are sensitive to tactile input.
I am a School Counselor to 320 amazing future leaders. They continue to inspire and drive me to be the best I can be each and every day. Our students enter the school doors each day with a story. Some stories they are excited to share and some that are told with sadness, frustration, anger, and other feelings that impede learning and positive social interactions. Whatever the case we recognize and respect our students needs and aim to fully support and accept the whole child socially/emotionally and academically. Our elementary aged students have an exploration mindset and as their educators we devote to providing a safe, nurturing, and inviting learning experience that breaks down the barriers to learning so they can be the best that they can be now and in the future.
My Project
Students learn best when they are in a calm and relaxed state of mind. Some students need a place to go or something to do to help themselves get to this "safe" mindset. With support from this donor choose project we would create at least 20 calm down caddies, one for each classroom in our school.
Students with access to a fidget tool (not to be confused with a toy) when they are feeling disregulated can calm down and quiet their mind and bodies.
Students will be shown where the calm down caddies are in each classroom, taught how to appropriately use the objects in the caddies, and given a reasonable and fair amount of time to use them. Brains that are calm and peaceful are better able to grow, take in new information, and apply critical and solution-focused thinking.
We acknowledge that children learn differently may it be visually, auditorily, or tactile/kinesthetically. Here at Suamico Elementary we believe that tactile tools need to be accessible to all learners.
We will also be adding calming/mindfulness activity cards and coloring sheets to our calm down caddies.
