Students learn best when they are in a calm and relaxed state of mind. Some students need a place to go or something to do to help themselves get to this "safe" mindset. With support from this donor choose project we would create at least 20 calm down caddies, one for each classroom in our school. Students with access to a fidget tool (not to be confused with a toy) when they are feeling disregulated can calm down and quiet their mind and bodies. Students will be shown where the calm down caddies are in each classroom, taught how to appropriately use the objects in the caddies, and given a reasonable and fair amount of time to use them. Brains that are calm and peaceful are better able to grow, take in new information, and apply critical and solution-focused thinking. We acknowledge that children learn differently may it be visually, auditorily, or tactile/kinesthetically. Here at Suamico Elementary we believe that tactile tools need to be accessible to all learners. We will also be adding calming/mindfulness activity cards and coloring sheets to our calm down caddies.
