Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 9-12 grade high school students. 94% of our community is Latinx and we are a Title I school. My students are smart, gritty, and humorous. Most students come from difficult home lives, lower social economic development levels, and enjoy problem solving activities. They love to work with their hands, think outside the box, and debate like nobody’s business.

I want to support my students to become even more independent by learning to develop and build a variety of food producing systems.

We live in a very arid region down on the southern border, so growing food with less water is more sustainable than conventional methods. Since the food is grown at home or in the classroom it will be more healthy and have less contamination from non-organic fertilizers and pesticides. Many students are in clubs that volunteer time, energy and labor to community projects, so I'd like to give back to them as well.

My Project

The hydroponics food growing systems are a great way to introduce water conservation in our arid region. Fresh water is our most precious resource and makes up only 2.5% of the worlds total water supply. My students would greatly benefit from this water conservation hands-on project. Students would learn sustainable agricultural methods as well as environmental engineering designs.

My students will enjoy the building and the cooperative learning experience that goes with creating a variety of hydroponic systems for our classroom.

This project will highly motivate students that learn better through kinetic and sensory experiences and give them an opportunity they would not normally receive.

This hydroponics experience will enrich and inspire my students' interest in STEM fields after graduation.
