Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our Spanish scholars openly and eagerly embrace cultural learning experiences. Quickly absorbing a new language opportunity is meaningful for them. Next month, the Atlanta Opera is performing a wonderful rendition of Frida Kahlo. We were not able to afford tickets for the children to attend, however, we wish to create a Frida Kahlo performance and art exhibit at the school and possibly open it up to the community. Each artist needs a canvas and materials to create their masterpieces. We also need to order books and materials about Frida Kahlo. (If anyone has these materials, we would appreciate them as well). I have been checking out as many books from the library as possible and reading it to the class. This would be a great opportunity to celebrate her life during Spanish Heritage Month.

My Project

These materials will serve as the foundation for the masterpieces my students create. They will study and use some of her works to duplicate in their own creative style. We will display these at the exhibit and online for you to see! The students will have hands on information through literature that will help them create Frida Kahlo inspired portraits. They will also have a deeper and more meaningful and tangible explanation of her significance. Each student will use a canvas to finalize the initial drawing of their Kahlo inspired art work. They will describe their picture in Spanish and label it with a Spanish name. This will serve to combine the language and culture with art. As many as a hundred students will use the materials to learn more about the significance of one woman who impacted the world. It is my hope that each student will strive to make a lasting impact in our world and together we can make this a reality and possibility for them.
