Future Leaders in Alternative Energies

My students need wind turbines and solar generators, for hands-on experience with alternative energies, so that they can lead our country into the future.

My Students

News reports of oil spills, natural gas explosions and trapped miners tell us that our natural resources are becoming more difficult and more expensive to extract. Students need experience with renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power to lead our country into the future.

My sixth grade students are full of curiosity and wonder, ready to change the world.

They are enthusiastic about science, especially when activities are included that allow them to manipulate and experiment. As with any middle school student, they learn best by doing, and are not afraid to dive in to solve problems. When given the an engineering task, they will rise to the challenge and find the best possible solution to the problem.

My Project

We live in an area that is dependent on cars for transportation, but the reality is that in their lifetime, my students will be faced with a shortage of oil to power gasoline engines. Since they were born in 1999, the cost of a gallon of gas has already tripled. Fossil fuels that are now currently used to generate electricity will become more expensive and impractical. I would like to purchase wind turbines and solar generators, so that my students will be able to experience the power of these clean, renewable energy resources first hand. They will experiments with the design of turbines to encourage them to think like engineers. The will explore placement of solar panels and develop problem solving skills that they will carry with them for life. My hope is to get them excited about wind and solar energy options, encourage them to solve problems encountered while experimenting, and give them the confidence to change the world.

Renewable energies such as wind and solar are the future and my students are just the ones to lead us in the direction of sustainable living.

It is my belief that if my students are exposed to these alternative energy sources in a fun, experimental activity, they will make an immediate impact on our community as they convince their parents to invest in their future. This will open the door for them to explore career options in alternative energy development.
