My Students
Scholars at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. I am a Kindergarten teacher at a K-5 elementary school in an impoverished urban area. We are a Title I elementary school (low socio-economic population) with strong military family connections. All our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Our ELL learner population continues to grow as more and more families move into our areas. We also have autistic and developmentally delayed learners. Our school is an essential resource for my students. Many of my students do not have access to learning experiences that field trips provide.
My Project
Our city is home to Nauticus—an interactive science and technology museum that explores the naval, economic, and nautical power of the sea. There students can learn about our waterways and the plants and animals that live in those waterways. In addition, many exhibits explore the naval presence in our community, including the Battleship Wisconsin—one of the largest and last battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy
The Elizabeth River—the main body of water that runs through Norfolk—is full of marine plants and animals, but also, there’s a whole world too small to view with the naked eye.
Nauticus offers a program in which students will use a variety of technology to get a closer look at the hidden creatures in our local waters.
Funding for entrance to the museum is being covered elsewhere, but we need money to rent the buses to get there. With your help, our scholars will be able to build the foundation of the knowledge and understanding needed to become responsible citizens of our coastal community.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
